Level 4

Level 4 continues to develop and review what was learned in Levels 0 - 3. Read chord symbols and improvise with chords; play all tonic chords in order of sharp keys; play all tonic chords in order of flat keys; and play major and minor chords in chromatic order. Theoretically subdivide the beat from quarter to sixty-fourth notes; analyze fast dotted rhythm; eighth and sixteenth note combinations; irregular and syncopated rhythms; and the pyramid of note values. Recognize ornaments for acciaccatura, appoggiatura, trills, turns, and mordents; chromatic and whole tone scales; and tetrachord scales in all keys. Recognize the scales of the predominant tones; name scales by letter degree, sol-fa, and terms; memorize the seven sharps and seven flats in a key signature; and all keys in the circle of fifths. Technically overlap arpeggio fingering; rotate in a fast Alberti bass; scratch grace notes fast, effortlessly, and gracefully; fast wrist staccato in 6ths; maintain a continuous octave accompaniment; toss and drape chords; and spring and pull chords. The pieces played in Level 4 consist of traditional songs and arrangements of classic melodies from operas, symphonies, and master piano works; along with classic duets, and original intermediate pedagogical pieces.
